Michael was awarded a PhD (solid state physics) in 1998 and then an Australian NHMRC Postdoctoral Fellow from 1999 to 2003. Since 2004 he has held an academic position in the School of Physics at the University of Wollongong (UOW) and is now a Senior Professor. Michael is currently the Engineering and Information Sciences (EIS) Faculty Associate Dean of Research and Deputy Director of the UOW Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP). Michael’s field of research is in the development and clinical translation of novel, solid-state based detectors and instrumentation for applications in radiation medicine. He is also interested in the optimization of radiation medicine created by the physical and semiconducting properties of engineered nano-structured ceramics. Michael has published over 250 scientific peer reviewed journal articles and has supervised more than 45 higher degree research students to completion. He is currently an elected member of the IEEE NPSS Radiation Instrumentation Steering Committee as well as the International Solid State Dosimetry Organisation.
